Planning a Disney World vacation can be stressful. You spend months researching, budgeting, booking dining reservations, and trying to make the trip feel “magical.” As a result, many families begin to believe the magic comes from spending more money. However, what kids really remember about Disney World goes far beyond the expensive extras.
But after visiting Disney with my family over the years, I’ve realized something important: Our kids usually do not remember the expensive parts, they remember the little moments.

Making Disney Memories
What are the most important parts of your Disney trip?
Often, it’s the little moments your family shares together. Kids remember the fun bus rides back to the resort when everyone is exhausted. They remember sharing Mickey-shaped ice cream while sitting on a curb waiting for a parade. They remember dancing in front of Cinderella Castle, riding the Skyliner, splashing in the pool at night, and staying up too late talking in the hotel room.
In the end, the real magic of Disney is rarely found in the price tag.
When families plan a Disney World vacation, they often focus on the big things:
- The most popular rides
- Expensive extras
- Dining reservations
- Souvenirs
- Trying to “do it all”
However, what kids really remember about Disney World usually looks very different.

The Little Resort Moments Kids Love
Sometimes the best Disney memories happen back at the resort, especially after spending long days in the parks. That’s why it’s important to slow down and make time to explore your resort by setting aside a resort-only day during your trip.
Our family always includes an extra day as part of our trip to make sure we have enough time to explore our resort.
Free Resort Activities Families Often Overlook
Many Disney resorts offer free activities that families forget about, including:
- Outdoor Disney movie nights
- Campfires with marshmallows
- Poolside games and activities
- Walking paths around the resorts
- Resort playgrounds
- Electrical Water Pageant viewing
- Live music at select resorts
These slower moments often become the memories kids remember the most.

Disney Transportation Becomes Part of the Magic
Kids love Disney transportation almost as much as the parks themselves. In fact, some of the most memorable moments happen while simply getting from place to place around Disney World.
Some of our favorite Disney memories include:
- Riding the monorail just for fun
- Taking the ferry boat to Magic Kingdom
- Watching the sunset from the Skyliner
- Resort hopping on a non-park day
- Hearing “Please stand clear of the doors” on the monorail
Best of all, these Disney transportation experiences are completely free and add extra magic to your vacation without adding extra cost.
If Disney transportation feels overwhelming, don’t worry. At Budget the Magic, we have broken everything down for you in our Disney transportation guide, including the monorail, Skyliner, buses, boats, and helpful resort transportation tips for families.

The Small Park Moments Matter Most
While rides are exciting, and we definitely love them, kids also enjoy many of the slower moments and activities around the parks. From parades and snacks to exploring different lands and watching live entertainment, there is so much more to Disney World than just rides.
We’ve put together a list of some of our family’s favorite things to do around the parks. Want even more details? Explore our park-to-park guides at Budget the Magic. We’ve broken everything down for you to help make your Disney vacation easier, less stressful, and even more magical.

Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom’s Hidden Gem: Rafiki’s Planet Watch
One of the most overlooked experiences in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is Rafiki’s Planet Watch. While many guests rush from ride to ride, this quieter area gives families a chance to slow down and explore something completely different.
Getting there is part of the fun because families ride the Wildlife Express Train to reach Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Kids often love the train ride just as much as the destination itself.
Once there, families can:
- Explore hands-on exhibits
- Learn about animal care and conservation
- Watch veterinarians at work through viewing windows
- Visit the Affection Section petting zoo
- Take a break from the busy crowds

At the end of the day, your kids may not remember every ride, reservation, or expensive extra from your Disney vacation. However, they will remember the way Disney felt.
Instead of trying to book every extra experience, consider choosing one special character dining or character experience your family will truly enjoy. Then, spend the rest of your trip soaking in all the free magic Disney has to offer.
Sometimes the most magical parts of Disney World are the moments we never planned at all.
